Streaming Platform Guide for Australia

Confused by Prime Video, Apple TV, Hubbl and Fetch TV?

You're not alone. Many Australians assume that if a movie, TV show or sporting event appears inside a streaming platform, it's automatically included with their subscription. In reality, today's streaming platforms combine included content with rentals, purchases and third-party subscriptions.

Streaming Platform Guide for Australia

Streaming Platform Guide

Understand the difference between streaming platforms, streaming services and subscription marketplaces.

This guide explains how they work, what's included, and what may cost extra.

This guide isn't about recommending one platform over another. We partner with several of Australia's major streaming platforms, but each works differently. This guide explains what each platform does, what's included, and where additional subscriptions or purchases may apply.

In Australia, there are streaming service and platforms.

Streaming service (Netflix, Disney+, Stan, Binge, Paramount+, Apple TV+, BritBox)

Streaming platform (Prime Video, Apple TV, Hubbl, Fetch TV)

A streaming service owns or licenses content.

A streaming platform brings together multiple streaming services, rentals and purchases into one interface.

Prime Video

Streaming services in Australia

Streaming services in Australia, the ecosystems are roughly:

Hubbl (Foxtel Group)

Kayo Sports
BINGE
Flash
Netflix
Disney+
Prime Video
Apple TV+
and others

Since Hubbl is owned by the Foxtel Group, it naturally promotes Kayo and BINGE.

Apple TV app

Apple TV+
Prime Video
Disney+
Paramount+
Kayo Sports
HBO
and others through Apple Channels/App Store

Apple is platform-agnostic. If an app exists on Apple TV, Apple is generally happy to sell or promote it because it benefits from subscriptions and App Store revenue.

Fetch TV

Paramount+
Prime Video
Netflix
Disney+
Kayo*

*Kayo's absence isn't surprising because Kayo is part of the Foxtel ecosystem (the competition). Foxtel has little incentive to distribute it through a competing set-top-box platform if it can drive users to Hubbl instead.

Confusing

This is where it becomes less about "streaming services" and more about distribution ecosystems.

Amazon - all subscribers can access PrimeTV regardless of their plan.
Apple subscription marketplace.
Hubbl/Foxtel - subscription marketplace.
Fetch - ecosystem with different commercial agreements.
